Winter ’20 Foundation News of Note

Welcome Lily and Lisa! The John T. Gorman Foundation has made two great additions to its team. Lily Collins (left) joins us as Administrative Assistant/Receptionist with a non-profit background that includes conservation, sustainable farming, and food security. New Program Associate Lisa Margulies is an attorney who most recently worked as Senior Policy Specialist for the Crime and Justice Institute (CJI) at Community Resources for Justice, where she provided technical assistance to state governments in developing data-driven, evidence-based policies to improve their criminal and juvenile justice systems. She has also served as an assistant public defender in Philadelphia and a public school teacher in New York City. Welcome to the team!

Now Accepting Grant Applications:
The John T. Gorman Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2020 Direct Services Grant Program (DSGP). These grants of up to $25,000 go to non-profit organizations working to provide quality supports and services that address the immediate basic needs of economically disadvantaged people in Maine. Applications will be accepted through 5:00 PM on Wednesday, March 25, 2020. Go here for more information and to apply.

Two-Gen Brief Coming Soon: The Foundation will soon be releasing a policy brief on two-generation approaches to addressing poverty, which seek to help parents and their children simultaneously. The brief will put forward policy recommendations based on what Maine’s two-generation practitioners have learned about helping whole families succeed. We believe two-generation practices—which have had positive results in Maine and across the country—have much to teach us about helping parents be successful in education and employment, supporting the healthy development of children, and placing families at the center of public decision-making. Stay tuned.

Growing LA’s Workforce: In January, the Foundation joined the LA Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce in announcing Strengthen LA, a comprehensive strategy to help grow and strengthen Lewiston-Auburn’s workforce. The Chamber has already committed $10,000 in funds and donations – and, the Foundation has committed to match private funds raised for Strengthen LA with an up to $150,000 grant in workforce investment. Learn more about this exciting new initiative here.
Lewiston Learns from Harlem: With Foundation support, a group of Lewiston leaders traveled to New York to learn from the groundbreaking work of Harlem Children’s Zone, whose mission is “To break the cycle of poverty in Central Harlem by working at scale to build community, strengthen families and ensure that our children succeed from birth through college and career.” Read more here.
Helping Mainers With Cancer: Our founder Tom Gorman cared deeply about helping Mainers with cancer and their families through this terrible disease. Over the last two years, we have partnered with the Maine Cancer Foundation to carry on that legacy, working with this great organization to make grants to nonprofits that provide vital hospice and transportation services to those in need. Watch WMTW 8’s recent story on this partnership here.
