Pneumonia vaccination may offer protection against COVID-19

In The Conversation, a professor of Physiology from Michigan State University discusses cutting edge research on how rates of standard vaccinations may protect against COVID-19. After analyzing data on vaccination rates for a number of diseases, there was only evidence that pneumonia vaccines offer statistically significant protection against COVID-19. Another study from Mayo Clinic researchers found strong associations between pneumonia vaccination and protection from COVID-19, although this forthcoming research is not yet peer-reviewed. Importantly, rates of childhood pneumonia vaccination vary across U.S. states from 74 percent to 92 percent, and populations of color tend to have lower rates of vaccination. Increasing the reach of this already available and safe vaccine may help bolster public health and protect vulnerable populations. #covid-19 #transmission
